KUCHING, July 13: Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), a component party of Sarawak ruling coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with local Opposition party Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) today.
However, specific details of their collaboration have not been disclosed.
PDP president Dato Sri Tiong King Sing briefly explained that the agreement symbolised the parties’ commitment to advancing stability, solidarity and unity in order to strengthen the Sarawak government.
“(This) will help the (Sarawak) government to carry out greater development initiatives for the sake and benefit of the people in Sarawak,” he told a press conference after chairing the PDP Supreme Council Meeting and signing of the MoU held at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
The MoU was signed by Tiong, representing PDP and PSB party president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.
PDP deputy president Dato Henry Harry Jinep expressed positivity regarding this development, as it indicates that the Opposition has finally recognised Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) effectiveness in leading Sarawak towards becoming a developed State by 2030.
“We have discussed in length with the permission and support of the Supreme Council members, and the party has decided to work together with PSB.
“The collaboration is for the unity and to enhance the wellbeing of the Sarawak people, in alignment with the ‘segulai sejalai’ principle to make Sarawak great,” he said.
Henry further mentioned that this partnership will be good for the people of Sarawak with less politicking and a focus on improving the standard of living in the State.
When asked about the possibility of the Opposition ceasing to exist in Sarawak, Henry clarified: “I can’t say that. But what we see today is that the Opposition now recognises that GPS is on the right track in steering Sarawak towards its vision of a developed with the efficacy of GPS’s governance and policies, which the people have begun to accept.
