KUCHING, July 19: The Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development (KPWKM) has assured that the Social Welfare Department (JKM) will continue to monitor the welfare of a Sarawakian man whose plight came to the ministry’s attention after he was reportedly left homeless in Johor following a stroke and the loss of his job.

According to its minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, the Johor JPM took immediate action by visiting the elderly man after the case gained public attention and subsequently approved financial assistance, which will be provided from August this year until July 2027.

She elaborated that assistance will include financial aid and regular visits to monitor his condition and identify any additional support he may require.

“Do not assume the assistance will end in 2027 alone, because we want to continue monitoring whether he secures employment or has other appropriate needs to ensure his well-being,” she said when met by reporters after officiating the Kasih Ibu Tunggal (KASIHNITA) 2026 Programme here today, as reported by TVS.

Additionally, she said that the government is ready to assist the man should he wish to return to Sarawak, as well as seek suitable accommodation if he has no place to stay upon returning to the State.

At the same time, she urged Sarawakians to be more attentive to the welfare of fellow Sarawakians living away from home by promptly informing the authorities if they come across anyone in need of assistance.

The man’s plight first came to light after TikTok user @nuryaya72 shared his story on the platform, appealing for help.

According to the post, he was abandoned by his family after suffering a stroke and losing his job, leaving him homeless for the past three months.

The user also said she had found him an empty house to stay in and had been providing him with food, drinks and assistance with his daily needs. — DayakDaily
