KUCHING, Oct 31: The Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development (KPWKM) is reviewing the placement of a baby boy found buried alive in Kapit on Oct 27 to ensure his safety and welfare are protected.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said the placement had yet to be finalised as the ministry needed to identify a suitable and eligible person to take responsibility for the baby’s care.

“At this stage, we have yet to obtain a court order to identify a suitable and eligible person, as the mother’s family is still around.

“That is why we need to be careful about who we entrust the child to. We must exercise extreme caution,” she said at a press conference after officiating at the KPWKM Santuni Kasih 2026 Programme here today, as reported by TVS.

Nancy said the baby was still receiving specialist medical treatment at a hospital in Sibu after being transferred from Kapit.

She added that the ministry’s protection officers were working with the baby’s maternal family and counsellors to help the family cope with the situation.

In the incident on Oct 27, the newborn baby was found alive, buried in the ground near a rented house along Jalan Airport in Kapit.

Meanwhile, Nancy said the ministry would not make any assumptions about the mother’s condition, including the possibility that she was experiencing postpartum depression, as the matter required medical assessment and further investigation.

She also stressed that the baby’s safety remained the ministry’s priority throughout the process of determining his future caregiver.

“We need to be careful about who we entrust the child to. We must exercise extreme caution,” she said. — DayakDaily
