Goods importer in Kuching loses RM300k to Chinese currency exchange scam

KUCHING, Aug 12: A man in his 20s, working as a goods importer, has lost about RM300,000 after falling victim to Chinese currency exchange scam.

Sarawak Commissioner of Police Dato Mancha Ata revealed that the victim who was in Kuching in early June this year, came across an online advertisement on WeChat Moments that offer Chinese Yuan (RMB) currency exchange services.

The victim then contacted the suspect who offered an exchange rate of 1.56 per cent and promised to deposit the money into the victim’s Alipay account.

The victim was also added into a WeChat group and instructed by the suspect to make the payment including the service charge.

“Between late June until early August this year, the victim has carried out 19 monetary transactions in increments to eight different accounts, totalling about RM300,000.

“The victim only realised he had been deceived when promised payments of RMB into his Alipay account failed to materialise followed by being kicked out and blocked from the WeChat group,” he said in a statement today. — DayakDaily
