KUCHING, Aug 29: Advocates Association of Sarawak (AAS) has described the newly passed Gig Workers Bill 2025 as not only a victory for workers but also a reinforcement of Malaysia’s labour system, offering certainty and a balance between innovation, flexibility, and protection.

AAS president Gurvir Singh Sandhu said the landmark legislation, passed in on Thursday (Aug 28), represents long-awaited recognition for the 1.2 million gig workers across Malaysia, including many in Sarawak, who play a vital role in powering the nation’s modern economy.

“The new Act provides a clear legal framework for the status of gig workers, ensuring that their rights and welfare are no longer left uncertain,” he said in a statement today.

Among its key provisions are minimum payment standards to safeguard gig workers from exploitation, a newly established Gig Workers Tribunal to handle disputes, and stronger social security protections through mandatory Social Security Protection Schemes (Perkeso) contributions digitally administered via platforms.

The Bill also extends its coverage beyond p-hailing and e-hailing riders to include creative, professional, and care-based service providers, reflecting the broad spectrum of gig work in Malaysia.

“For Sarawak, where many young people, creative professionals, and part-time workers rely on gig work, this Act safeguards livelihoods while preserving the flexibility that attracts so many to the sector,” Gurvir added.

He further commended the Ministry of Human Resources and the federal government for turning the aspirations of citizens into concrete protections for workers, noting that the law represents progress towards justice, fairness, and social well-being for all Malaysians.

“This Act ensures that gig workers will no longer be left behind in the nation’s pursuit of inclusive growth,” he stressed. — DayakDaily
