KUCHING, May 10: Geo-fencing enforcement for e-hailing services has been officially implemented at Kuching International Airport and Sibu Airport since May 1, 2025, with similar measures set to take effect at Bintulu and Miri airports starting July 1.
Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak chairman Michael Kong announced that the move follows a recent follow-up meeting between CVLB Sarawak, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), and all major e-hailing operators to fine-tune the rollout of the geo-fencing initiative aimed at improving airport traffic management.
“We are pleased to note that the e-hailing operators have taken proactive steps to comply with the geo-fencing requirements. Their cooperation will help to ease congestion around the airports, creating a smoother and safer environment for all passengers and users,” he said in a statement today.
MAHB also shared its plans to introduce geo-fencing at Bintulu and Miri airports from July 1, with full support and commitment from all e-hailing operators involved.
“These measures are important to better regulate pick-up and drop-off activities and ensure traffic flows efficiently at our airports,” he added.
In addition to geo-fencing, Kong raised concerns over the issue of indiscriminate parking around airport premises.
He said vehicles left unattended for extended periods have become a recurring issue, causing traffic disruptions and inconvenience to other users.
“While we understand the need to send off or pick up loved ones, we urge the public to be considerate and make use of the ample parking spaces provided at all airports,” he stressed.
MAHB has assured CVLB Sarawak that it is addressing the matter, while enforcement agencies such as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have committed to stepping up random checks and enforcement at airport areas.
Kong reiterated that CVLB Sarawak will continue monitoring the situation and working closely with all stakeholders to ensure smoother traffic management and a more orderly airport experience for the public.
“Through cooperation from authorities, service providers, and the public, we can make our airports safer and more efficient for everyone,” he said. — DayakDaily
