KUCHING, May 25: Gedong and Telang Usan were among 10 localities in Sarawak identified to be under the federal government’s hardcore poverty eradication pilot programme.

The Office of the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) said the implementation of the Keluarga Malaysia hardcore poverty eradication programme (BMTKM) Phase 1 will begin end of May, 2022.

The other eight localities in Sarawak also included in the programme are Kampung Seberang Sebuyau in Sebuyau, Kampung Bakong in Lingga, Long Kajang in Belaga, Kampung Spaoh in Betong, Baram or Ulu Tinjar, Pakan, Lawas, and Daro.

Including Sarawak, the government listed a total of 80 localities across the whole of Malaysia to be under the same pilot programme.

The office said BMTKM will continue to focus on Sarawak as it records the highest poverty rate of 9 per cent in Malaysia in 2019, compared to the national poverty rate of 5.6 per cent.

“The goal of this BMTKM programme is to achieve zero hardcore poverty by 2025, as it has been set out in the 12th Malaysia Plan,” it said in a statement yesterday (May 24).
