KUCHING, Nov 21: Gedong Circuit is set to become Sarawak’s first international motorsports hub, hosting Formula 3 (F3) and motorcycle racing categories.
In a TVS news, Sarawak Motor Sports Association (SMA) president Senator Dato Ahmad Ibrahim said the 600-acre project is awaiting full approval, with the first phase expected to kick off between 2026 and 2027.
“Gedong Circuit is a major development. The land is ready, and funds have already been allocated by the Premier of Sarawak.
“We are just waiting for the green light. This 15- to 20-year dream is almost reality,” he said during a press conference at the Borneo Star Drift Series 2025 at Miri City Council (MBM) today.
He added that the circuit has the potential to position Sarawak as a motorsports reference point in the region, with the first phase estimated to cost between RM150 million and RM200 million.
“Our aim is to make Gedong the focal point for all F3 and lower-tier motorsports across Borneo. Other states can also come to Sarawak. This is the future of our motorsports,” he said.
Ahmad also highlighted the economic benefits the development could bring to local communities, particularly in the hospitality, maintenance and retail sectors.
“When teams come to compete, they don’t come alone as they bring crews, families and friends. This supports accommodation centres, restaurants, tire shops, mechanics, and spare parts workshops. That’s the economic boost,” he said. — DayakDaily
