SELANGAU, April 21: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) vice-president Datuk John Sikie Tayai announced that the new face to contest under the party’s flag for the coming general election (GE14) in Selangau would be Rita Insol.

Sikie made the announcement before a crowd of thousands of Selangau locals during the closing of the Youth Education and Sports Transformation Carnival at Selangau town here this evening, representing PRS president Tan Sri James Jemut Masing.

“She is a professional and is most surely able to lead you. Besides, if she wins, Rita would be the first ever female Iban Member of Parliament in Malaysia.

“Statistics show that more that 51 per cent of Malaysian voters are women. So women, please vote for a woman candidate,” said Sikie.

Meanwhile, PRS Youth chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan urged Selangau voters to unite and vote for the candidate that has been approved by the caretaker Prime Minister who is also National Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said when united, it would be easier for leaders and elected representatives to hear their voices and plights.

“When you all have a united voice, we can easily hear about your plights and bring more development to your community here.

“Election is coming, so please spread the word around on who BN top leadership has picked as your candidate here. Together we support her and do vote for her so that your voices will continue to be heard and development will continue smoothly.

“The BN government has planned much development for you in the future so please ensure (BN receives) the mandate so that these developments will be carried out,” said Snowdan.

Rita, 56, was a Magistrate with the state Judicial Department and later Chief Legal Counsel-cum-Head of Legal and Secretariat Division, responsible for the provision of legal and secretariat services, and management of tenders and contracts for the Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd group of companies before her early retirement.
