KUCHING, April 6: The Sarawak government is ready to assess whether there is a need for additional ferry services at Batang Paloh in conjunction with the upcoming Gawai Dayak, following reports of congestion leading up to Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
According to TVS, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said at the moment, there are three ferries stationed at Batang Paloh for the convenience of those returning to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
“The congestion that occurred leading up to the Hari Raya celebrations previously, I believe, was due to the increased number of vehicles because the Batang Rajang Bridge has been completed.
“We are ready to assess the situation and determine if there is a need to add more ferries there for the upcoming Gawai festival,” he said when met after a Hari Raya Aidilfitri programme in Kampung Spaoh on April 5.
Previously, there had been reports of congestion at the Batang Paloh ferry terminal leading up to the Aidilfitri celebrations, leading to vehicles queuing up to a stretch of five kilometres.
As a result, users on that route had to wait for up to six hours to cross Batang Paloh. — DayakDaily
