MIRI, May 22: At least eight men allegedly barged into a meeting at the Gawai Dayak Bazaar in Permyjaya here on Monday night, wounding the bazaar’s coordinator.

The 42-year-old victim,, sustained multiple cuts and bruises during the attack which happened around 8.40pm.

According to sources, the victim who is also the President of Gagasan Anak Dayak Sarawak (GADS), has been identified as Vicky Gulin Shandom.

Sources added, the victim was kicked and punched as well as hit with wooden sticks and a liquor bottle by the attackers.

Following the incident, the victim was rushed to Miri Hospital for treatment.

A police report on the attack was subsequently lodged at Lutong police station.

Preliminary investigations revealed the motive for the attack was due to a certain group’s dissatisfaction over their request to stage a performance at the bazaar on May 25 being kept-in-view (KIV).

Their request was KIV due to the programme on that date being fully booked and no more slots were available. They were told that the organiser will discuss other slots and dates for their performance with them.

However, instead, the group decided to confront the bazaar’s coordinator.

Prior to the attack, the victim together with five other working committee members were in a meeting under a canopy near the stage area when suddenly the assailants appeared, shouting the victim’s name.

The brawl ensued moments later.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with the use of weapons. — DayakDaily
