Funeral service sparks Ulu Sebakong Cluster with 50 positive cases

KUCHING, June 6: A funeral service at a longhouse in Ulu Sebakong, Mukah has led to a new Covid-19 cluster in Sarawak with 50 cumulative positive cases to date.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in its daily statement said the community cluster was detected from the funeral activity held from May 19 to 21, which was attended by the longhouse residents.


Based on previous reports, Mukah Division Health Office on May 31 had announced the detection of several positive cases who attended a funeral at Rh Rimong Kilat in Ulu Sebakong and requested for individuals who attended the said funeral to contact the district health offices.

“A total of 147 individuals linked to the Ulu Sebakong Cluster have been screened whereby 50 people were tested positive for Covid-19 including the index case, 90 negative and seven are still awaiting laboratory results,” SDMC said.

All positive cases from the cluster were referred and admitted to Sibu Hospital and Mukah Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) for isolation and further treatment.

At the same time, SDMC announced the end of five clusters after reporting no new positive cases for the past 28 days.

They are Sungai Kawi Cluster, Sungai Rian Cluster and Sungai Lemayong Cluster in Meradong; Ulu Balingian Cluster in Selangau; and Sungai Senibung Cluster in Julau.
