KUCHING, Jan 10: Sarawak Patriots Association (SPA) has reminded interim Education Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to fulfil promises made by Putrajaya with regards to education matters in the state.
The association, in a statement, said its members are looking forward to newly appointed acting education minister, who is also prime minister, to fulfil education promises to Sarawak.
SPA expressed hope that Dr Mahathir would also return autonomy over education and health to Sarawak.
“SPA is (hopefully) waiting for the acting education minister to reverse the Jawi study requirement in primary schools, as well as expedite the approval (recognition) of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC),” the association said.
SPA believed that parents who sent their children to Chinese Middle Schools would rejoice once these suggestions are taken into account. The association expressed confidence that Dr Mahathir would consider the suggestions.
“We expect that our prime minister Dr Mahathir would approve UEC qualifications, without any delay, as a university entrance requirement and entrance to government vacancies,” the association said.
SPA congratulated Dr Mahathir on his appointment as the acting education minister, while admiration that the nation’s premier will assume the role at the age of 94.
“What the leaders around the world would say, as he is now also acting education minister. We hope there is no unnecessary negative image created due to the appointment.
“On the other side, we Sarawakians can expect more allocations from the prime minister so that sufficient fund shall be generated to Sarawak to repair the dilapidated schools,” SPA said. — DayakDaily
