KUCHING, Jan 5: Majlis Perbandaran Kota Samarahan (MPKS) chairman Dato Peter Minos believes that providing free tertiary education in 2026 is crucial for realising Sarawak’s vision of achieving a robust economy and industrialisation by 2050.
Minos expressed his optimism, stating that Sarawak has set the groundwork since 2016, and the provision of free tertiary education demonstrates the leadership’s commitment to the State’s future.
“We are very happy that current Sarawak leaders have the vision and see its fruition by 2050 or even earlier,” Minos said in a statement today.
He emphasised that offering free tertiary education to Sarawakians in 2026 would be a historic and revolutionary move, impacting universities like Curtin and Swinburne University campuses in the region.
Minos believed that a quality university education would not only broaden minds but also propel Sarawak to greater heights in various human endeavors.
“High skills and expertise will surely put Sarawak on the pedestal, the highest in all of Malaysia. It will be great for us in Sarawak. We are proud of it all,” he added.
Drawing parallels with successful nations, Minos pointed to Singapore, China, and Japan, highlighting their achievements due to investing heavily in training and educating their people, despite having limited natural resources.
He cited China’s remarkable transformation in the ’70s, where the nation focused on providing expertise in various fields, ultimately propelling them to global economic and military prominence.
“Today, we see China on top of everything, and she only took over 30 years to do it, which is truly remarkable and admirable. By 2030, they may surpass the US as a superpower in the global economy and the military,” concluded Minos. ā DayakDaily
