KUCHING, Jan 29: The former governor of Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng has passed away yesterday due to natural causes.

Salahuddin, 100, drew his last breath at 11.47pm at the Normah Medical Centre.

According to Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Salahuddin’s remains will be taken to Masjid Jamek in Petra Jaya at 10.30am today for funeral prayers.


He would be laid to rest at the Samariang Muslim Cemetery after Zuhur prayer around 12.30pm.

He is survived by 13 children including two deceased, 25 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Born on Aug 27, 1921, Salahuddin had served as the Sarawak Governor from 1977 to 1981 and from 2001 to 2014, making him the first person to hold the post twice.

In 2000, he became the acting governor while his successor Tun Datuk Patinggi Ahmad Zaidi Adruce was ill.

He was reappointed permanently to the post when Ahmad Zaidi died in December 2000. ― DayakDaily
