Former SS Tan Sri Bujang Mohd Nor passes away aged 88

KUCHING, Oct 10: Former Sarawak Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Bujang Mohd Nor has passed away at Normah Medical Specialist Centre here earlier tonight.

Bujang, 88, drew his last breath at 8.40pm, Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) reported.

The deceased, who was born on Aug 8, 1935 and raised in Kampung No 5, Sungai Lajim, Kuching, will be buried at the Samariang Cemetery here tomorrow (Oct 11).


The late Bujang married Dato Sri Dayang Lela Abang Zawawi and was blessed with six children; two sons and four daughters.

During his lifetime, he received his early education at St. Joseph before continuing his studies at the University of Malaya in 1949 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts with Honours.

He served as a Lawas District Officer in 1962 and was appointed as a First Class Magistrate in Lawas in 1965, holding the position of Chief Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Natural Resources until 1965.

He was appointed three times as acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry replacing a British Expatriate Officer at that time.

In early 1965, he served as Sarikei and Bintangor District Officer until he was sent for a course in The Hague, Netherlands under the Colombo Plan Fellowship Award in the field of National Development.

He was then appointed to hold the position of Deputy Sarawak Financial Secretary upon his return from the Netherlands in 1967 before assuming the position of Sarawak Financial Secretary from 1971 to 1984.

He was subsequently appointed as the Sarawak Government Secretary in 1984 until 1992.

He was also awarded with various honors including the Datuk Amar Bintang Kenyalang (DA), Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM), Panglima Negara Bintang Sarawak (PNBS), Johan Setia Mahkota (JSM), Johan Bintang Sarawak (JBS), Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN), Pingat Bakti Jubli Perak and Pingat Peringatan Delima (Emas). – DayakDaily
