Former Senate president Ahmad Urai passes away at 89

KUCHING, June 12: Former Senate president Tan Sri Abang Ahmad Urai Datu Abang Mohideen has passed away at about 12.30am at Normah Hospital Kuching today, at the age of 89.

His remains were taken to his residence at Jalan Muda Hashim here this morning, and will be buried at Masjid Bahagian Muslim cemetery after Zohor prayers.

He is survived by his wife Puan Sri Datin Sri Siti Murniati, 63, two children and two grandchildren.


Bernama news portal reported that Ahmad Urai was rushed to Normah Hospital after he collapsed while attending a function at a local hotel last night.

The function itself was in conjunction with his appointment and proclamation as the patron of the Sarawak Malay National Association (PKMS).

Ahmad Urai was elected by the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) as Senator in the Parliament in 1984 before he became the Speaker of the Senate from 1988 to 1990.

Prior to that, he had served as the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports in Sarawak since 1976 and Minister of Agriculture and Community from 1981 to 1984. — DayakDaily
