Foreigner gets 8 months in jail for possessing 432kg of sugar without license

KUCHING, Jan 18: A 37-year-old foreign national was sentenced to eight months in prison for the possession of controlled goods without a license, namely 432kg of raw sugar.

In a media statement by Sarawak Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) director Matthew Dominic Barin, the accused, who is a man, was caught during an inspection carried out by a strategic partner of the ministry in Serian.

He said the charge was read before Judge Shafiza Datu Abdul Razak Tready under Regulation 3(1) of the Supply Control Regulations 1974, read together under Section 21 of the Supply Control Act 1961 and was convicted to a fine of RM15,000 and if he failed to pay the fine, he can be sentenced to eight months imprisonment.

“The accused failed to pay the fine and was ordered to serve a prison sentence of eight months and the items forfeited and turned into government revenue,” he said.
