Floods ravage 45 areas in Beluru district, displacing 4,974 people

MIRI, Jan 28: Beluru district is reeling from widespread flooding, with reports confirming that 45 areas have been severely affected as of 9pm last night (Jan 27).

According to a report by the Civil Defence Force (APM), persistent heavy rainfall, coupled with high tides since January 11, has inundated numerous longhouses, villages, schools, and healthcare facilities, displacing a total of 4,974 people and severely disrupting daily life.

Among the affected areas, Rh Magdaline in Lubok Mulong, Tinjar, is one of the hardest hit, with water levels reaching 8 feet 4 inches and 290 residents affected.

In Long Sepiling, Tinjar, 87 doors are submerged under 4 feet 8 inches of water, while Rh Sporran at Sg Sebindang faces record water levels of up to 8 feet, forcing its 35 residents to adapt to the escalating crisis.

Other areas that have been affected include Rh Awat, Sungai Nat Asal, Ulu Teru (8 feet 4 inches); Long Ajoi, Tinjar (4 feet 6 inches); Rh Joben, Long Tabing (2.8 feet); Rh Sandom Aji (27 inches); Rh Duri, Nanga Lait (3 feet to 4 feet 17 inches); Nanga Majang (4 feet 9 inches); Rh William, Sg Beluru Bakong (1.8 feet); Rh Dasu Kasa, Sg Tiram Bukit Nyaming Bakong (4 feet 2 inches); Rh Jau, Bato Long Teru, Tinjar (2 feet 3 inches to 3 feet 7 inches); Rh Aji, Sungai Tuyut, Tinjar (4 to 5 feet); Long Tabing (3 to 4 feet); Rh Bantang, Sg Sebindang (1 feet); Rh Kompeni, Agon Tanjung Mawang (4.5 feet); Rh Jawan, Sg Bong (1 feet); Rh Wannie, Kana Sg Lensat (3 to 4 feet); Nanga Pelajau Sungai Teru (5 feet); Long Tisam C (5 feet); Long Jegan B (3.5 feet); Rh Henry Gomes Kpg Mission Ulu Teru (12 inches); Long Tisam B (5 feet); Tanjung Ulu Teru, Tinjar (3 feet); Long Marigam, Tinjar (5.5 to 6.5 feet); Rh Peter Lembang Rantau Engkuang Teru, Tinjar (4 feet 10 inches); Rantau Segawa Sungai Lutong (2.4 feet); Rg Guyang Kampung Kwenie Tabing, Tinjar (5 to 6 feet); Rh Budin Sg Tuyut, Tinjar (2.9 feet); Rh Abok, Sungai Teru (3 feet); Rh Rendah Kpg Matek (1.6 feet); Kpg Matek Ulu Teru (3 feet); Rh John Marikan, Sg Buti, Teru, Tinjar (3 feet); Rh Francis Ginda Tanjong Mawang (5 feet); Rh Mathew Tiri, Sg Mangka Seruas, Bakong (4.5 feet); Rh Rengking Sungai Buri Tengah, Bakong (3 feet 2 inches); and Rh Jalin, Long Tisam D (7 feet).

Educational institutions in the district have not been spared, with SK Kuala Bok battling 5 feet of water, which has disrupted operations for 25 staff members. Meanwhile, SK Long Teru faces rising waters of 3 feet 2 inches, impacting 29 staff members.

Others are SK Sungai Bain (2.3 feet), SK Sungai Bong (45 inches), SK Pengarah Enteri (3.5 feet), and SK Long Sepiling (10 inches).

Healthcare services are also strained, with Klinik Kesihatan Long Teru dealing with water depths of up to 74 cm, and Klinik Kesihatan Ulu Teru grappling with similar conditions.

The Beluru District Office has reported that water levels continue to rise in most areas, while a few locations are seeing stable or receding levels.

As floods continue to devastate Beluru, residents are urged to remain vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, and cooperate with emergency response teams. – DayakDaily
