Floods force 2,320 people from 624 families to evacuate

KUCHING, Feb 5: Heavy continuous rain over the past three days has forced 2,320 people from 624 families in five divisions to evacuate.

As of 8am today, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee reported that all victims were placed in 20 flood evacuation centres, namely Kuching (three), Samarahan (eight), Serian (five) and Mukah (three) and Bintulu (one).

So far, Samarahan Division recorded the highest number of flood evacuees at 1,154 from 304 families, followed by Kuching Division with 562 evacuees from 149 families.


Serian Division recorded 562 victims from 149 families while Mukah Division with 187 members from 58 families.

Bintulu recorded 177 victims from 57 families.

Meanwhile, six schools in four divisions were forced to close temporarily due to flood.

A total of 940 students and 112 teachers from Dalat (three schools), Selangau (one), Mukah (one) and Simunjan (one) were temporary sheltered in four other schools at SMK Tabuan Jaya, SK Hj Bujang Rangawan, SK Mang and SK Hj Kelali Semera for their lessons. — DayakDaily
