KUCHING, Jan 10: The number of flood evacuees across Sarawak continued to rise as of 8am today, with a total of 2,831 people from 826 households now sheltering in 39 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) statewide, up from 2,326 evacuees recorded earlier in the day.

According to the latest Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) report, the increase reflects worsening flood conditions in several divisions, particularly in Samarahan, Serian and Kuching, where rising river levels and persistent rainfall forced more residents to leave their homes.

Samarahan alone recorded 375 evacuees from 113 households at SK Endap, the largest single concentration of flood victims in the State.

In the Kuching division, the number of evacuees at Surau Nur Hidayah in Batu Kitang Jaya rose to 53 people from 20 households, while flood conditions in Bau remained stable, with two temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in Krokong reporting unchanged numbers.

The Serian division continued to be one of the worst affected, with a significant increase in evacuees at multiple centres in Siburan and Serian districts.

PPS SK Tanah Merah saw its occupancy rise to 300 evacuees, while Kampung Maang recorded 140 evacuees. Several new relief centres were also opened in the division earlier, reflecting the expanding impact of the floods.

In Balai Ringin and Tebedu, rising numbers were reported at community halls used as relief centres, while the Mukah division’s Dalat district maintained a steady figure of 155 evacuees despite continued inundation in low-lying areas.

The Miri division also recorded increases at two centres in Tudan, although conditions at Dewan Pujut Tanjung Baru remained unchanged.

Meanwhile, Sebauh in the Bintulu division opened a new evacuation centre housing seven evacuees, marking the spread of flooding into additional areas.

Overall, authorities noted that the trend of flood evacuations remains upward, with disaster response agencies continuing to monitor river levels, weather conditions and the safety of affected communities.

Residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to remain alert and comply with evacuation instructions when issued.
