Flash floods predicted in Kuching, Bintulu, Limbang due to thunderstorms, heavy rain

The advisory issued by PRABN on the possibility of flash floods in several areas throughout the country.

KUCHING, Nov 18: Several areas in Kuching, Bintulu and Limbang have been identified as hotspots for possible flash floods in the next 24 hours, according to a notice issued by the National Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (PRABN).

PRABN under the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) issued the statement at 4pm today based on rain forecast information from the Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) model by the Malaysian Meteorological Department and the Southeastern AsiaOceania Flash Flood Guidance System (SAOFFGS), that there is a risk of flash floods occurring in some locations in the event of significant heavy rain and thunderstorms (within 24 hours).

In Kuching, there is a possibility of flash floods in several low-lying areas in the city.

While in Bintulu, areas that could be affected are Kg Sg Plan, Taman Sibiew Indah, Kg Baru, Taman Desa Damai, Kg Masjid, Kg Kemunting, Sibiew road, Sg Plan Terrace Housing, Kg Sinong, Siong Boon road, Kg Sg Plan Lot, Sg Plan squatter, Nyigu, Sibiew road in front of SK Siong Boon, Kg Jepak, Taman Sri Pelabuhan, Sg Plan, Desa Damai road, Samling Plywood area, PPR Bandaria Park junction, housing area next to Paragon Lrg A, Kg Jepak Serbuan Kecil, Bintulu town and its surrounding areas.

For Limbang, the affected areas are Nanga Medamit, Kg Batu Danau, Kg Ukong, SK Ukong, Kg Induk, Kg Sangkar, Kg Tanjong, Kg Tanjong Ukal, Kg Loagan Piasau, SK Tanjong, Kg Pengkalan Madang A, Kg Pengkalan Madang B, Kg Medait, Kg Pandak, Kg Lembuak, Kg Kuala Awang, Kg Pengkalan Jawa, Kg Bidang, end of Nanga Medamit road, Kg Kuala Meritam, Kg Merasam, Kg Bumbun, Kg Lubok Piasau, Kg Lubok Sigantang, Kg Binjai, Kg Lubok Tekuruk, Kg Telahak, Jalan Ukong, Kg Tanjong Reman, Pengkalan Madang road and surrounding area, Ukong Agriculture Station, Kg Ranggu, Rh, Lubok Pasu, Kg Belimbing, Sepangah Murut, Kg Kuala Tubai, Sk Nanga Medamit, Kg Betty, Kg Lubok Lasas, SK Danau, Batu Danau Rural Clinic and its surrounding area.

It said the preparedness notice is issued to enable all residents, especially in areas at risk, to be aware of any possible occurrence of flash floods for that period.

The department also advises members of the public to obey the instructions of the authorities or flood disaster management agencies.
