KUCHING, Jan 11: Thunderstorm, heavy rain and strong wind warnings have been issued for five districts in Sarawak in a notice which is valid until 5pm today (Jan 11).

The Malaysia Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), in an advisory issued at 1.30pm today, said the affected districts are Sri Aman (Lubok Antu), Sarikei (Pakan, Julau and Meradong), Sibu, Kapit (Song) and Bintulu (Tatau and Bintulu).

This notice is in effect due to the potential for severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms with a rain intensity exceeding 20mm/hour, either occurring or expected to last for more than an hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term advisory lasting up to six hours for a single release.

Additionally, MetMalaysia has issued an alert for continuous rainfall expected to affect Sarawak until Jan 12.

The eastern wind expected to occur until Jan 16 could cause an increase in humidity that may potentially bring continuous rain to Sarawak, eastern Sabah, and eastern Peninsular Malaysia, accompanied by strong winds and rough seas in the South China Sea during this period.

In various states, thunderstorms with heavy rain and strong winds are forecasted for the afternoon and night.

The public is strongly urged to stay informed by checking MetMalaysia’s official website at www.met.gov.my, following official METMalaysia social media channels, and downloading the MyCuaca app for the latest weather information. — DayakDaily
