KUCHING, Oct 9: Sarawak has carried out its fourth cloud seeding operation this year, which began on Thursday (Oct 8) and will continue until tomorrow (Oct 10), focusing on the State’s main dam areas according to two zones designated by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia).

According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), the El Niño phenomenon has left several dams—such as the Bakun, Murum, Bengoh, and Batang Ai dams—without sufficient rainfall catchment to ensure water levels do not reach critical stages.

The first day’s flight focuses on Zone A, covering dam areas in Belaga (Bakun and Murum) and the Bintulu area (Sika and Assyakirin).

Additionally, flights will head to Zone B—covering the Batang Ai and Bengoh dams—to conduct reconnaissance in preparation for the following day’s cloud seeding operations.

Cloud seeding was not carried out in Zone B first because seeding drift could enter the airspace of Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Therefore, operations in Zone B on the following day will take into account the findings from the first day’s reconnaissance survey.

Meanwhile, according to METMalaysia, the Mulu meteorological station recorded the second-highest maximum temperature nationwide on Thursday, at 35.3°C, behind the station in Kuantan, Pahang, which recorded the highest maximum temperature at 36.4°C.

In Sarawak, Kapit recorded the second-highest maximum temperature at 33.3°C, followed by Bintulu and Miri (32.5°C), Mukah (32.1°C), Kuching and Limbang (32.2°C), and Miri (31.5°C).

The public have been reminded to stay aware of weather changes and plan their daily activities by checking the latest weather information on the department’s official website and social media channels. — DayakDaily
