KUCHING, June 22: The federal government has approved the proposal to establish the Gedong District Council in Sarawak.
This increased the total number of local authorities (PBT) in the country to 156.
According to Bernama, federal Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced today that the proposal for the Gedong District Council was endorsed during a Cabinet meeting.
This council will oversee the entire Gedong district, following the Sarawak government’s decision to re-demarcate the administrative boundaries effective March 1, 2022, separating from the Simunjan District Council, where Gedong was previously situated.
Gedong district spans 612 square kilometres (61,200 hectares) and was formerly part of the Simunjan district in the Samarahan Division. It is home to 14,424 residents, with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg serving as its assemblyman.
Nga emphasised that the Gedong District Council must uphold high standards in delivering PBT services and ensure robust infrastructure and public utilities for the district’s residents.
“The criteria underscore the importance of fulfilling the aspirations of the Malaysia Madani government and the local community, promoting economic growth, enhancing national competitiveness, and improving quality of life,” he said.
He further expressed expectations that the Gedong District Council would support government initiatives and foster socio-economic progress in the Gedong district through collaborations with the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA).
“With this approval, we anticipate the Gedong District Council will effectively deliver PBT services, ensuring equitable development benefits reach the people, aligned with the unity government’s vision for a Malaysia Madani society,” he added. — DayakDaily
