KUCHING, Sept 1: The Federal government should facilitate in terms of putting in the right laws, governance, rules and regulation at the national level to enable Sarawak to fully exploit its carbon trading potential.
Work Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi explained that there are issues that affects Sarawak’s efforts to moneytise carbon trading due to no governance and proper national laws are in place for it.
“When we want to do the carbon trading, the issue is carbon tax, it is not confined to laws from Sarawak.
“We need a national law that enable us to fully exploit the potential of Sarawak in terms of green energy, carbon trading, and other sources of energy such as hydrogen, algae,” Nanta told SinarDaily at a special podcast collaboration with Bual Studios and Rena Sounds for Merdeka and Malaysia Day titled ‘From Malaya to Malaysia: 60 years’ released today.
He was responding to the host’s question regarding what can the Federal government do better to uphold the promises laid out in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, said now it is no longer just about providing funds for infrastructures, but it is on the governance and laws.
“So if you ask me what the Federal government needs to do, its not just about giving us the money to build roads and other things, but they should also facilitate in terms of putting in the right laws, governance, rules and regulation at the national level to enable us to exploit what we have to the fullest,” he added. — DayakDaily
