Family of 9 left homeless by fire in Bekenu, no casualties reported

NIAH, March 29: A family of nine has lost their home after it caught fire this afternoon.

No injuries or casualties were reported in the 4pm incident at Kampung Kelapa, Bekenu.

Niah fire station chief  PPgB Francis Aceh Angai disclosed that as the village is located some 40km away, it would take quite sometime for firefighters to reach the scene.

“Coincidentally, two firefighters were conducting public sanitisation at Bekenu Community Hall, hence the duo immediately went to the scene where a wooden house measuring 30 x 50 feet was on fire.

“With the help of fellow villagers, they managed to control and extinguish the fire with a portable pump, water source from open area and fire hydrant,” Francis said, adding that the operation ended at 5.58pm.
