MIRI, Feb 17: A man in his 20s in Miri lost RM18,900 after a scammer claiming to be his ‘friend’ asked to borrow money for house renovation.
According to Miri OCPD ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, the victim, a worker in a private company, made four transactions to two bank accounts provided by the suspect.
Alexson has confirmed receiving the report lodged by the victim on February 16.
“The suspect received a telephone call from an unknown caller claiming to be his friend who told him that he needed money to renovate his house,” Alexson said today in a statement.
The ‘friend’ told the victim that he had lost his handphone.
Alexson added that the victim only realised that he had been duped when he called his real friend, who denied making such a call to him.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which provides a maximum jail term of ten years and whipping and a fine if convicted. — DayakDaily
