KUCHING, Dec 25: It was a Christmas Eve like no other as St Peter’s Church Padungan welcomed an overflowing congregation for its inaugural midnight mass, marking a soft launching of this architectural marvel.

The mass, a historic moment for the church, was led by Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuching, Simon Poh, alongside Rector Rev Fr Vincent Chin and Father Galvin Richard Ngumbang.

Their inspiring presence added profound significance to the occasion, as they guided the congregation in heartfelt prayers, hymns, and a stirring homily that emphasised the message of hope, peace, and unity.

Designed to accommodate over 1,000 worshippers, the church was filled to capacity, with many more spilling onto the church grounds, eager to partake in the momentous occasion.

Under a serene night sky, the church stood as a radiant beacon, its elegant façade illuminated by ambient lighting that highlighted its striking architectural details.

It was bathed in a celestial glow as light streamed through towering stained glass windows, which depicted biblical scenes in vibrant, jewel-like hues.

The stunning interplay of colours painted the exterior in shades of ruby, sapphire, and emerald, creating an atmosphere of divine beauty and solemn reverence.

The celebration began with soothing carols by the choir at 11pm, their harmonies resonating through the acoustically rich sanctuary and reaching those gathered outside with their faces lit with anticipation and joy.

The altar was illuminated with cascading lights, drawing attention to its intricate carvings and gold accents, symbolising the light of Christ entering the world.

For those outside, large windows and a projector ensured everyone could participate, uniting the entire congregation in prayer and song.
