KUCHING, March 17: A factory worker was sentenced to 2 years’ jail by the High Court here today for transporting five Indonesians he knew to be illegal immigrants in his car in January 2022.

High Court Judge Alexander Siew How Wai delivered the verdict after Dominic Munkin, 41, pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 26J of Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (Atipsom) 2007.

The court also ordered that the jail sentence run from the day he was arrested, which is January 22, 2022.

The accused was charged with transporting five Indonesians in his sedan during a roadblock at Jalan Entugam, Lubok Antu, at about 8.05pm on January 22, 2022.

Section 26J of the Atipsom 2007 Act carries a jail term of up to five years, or a maximum RM250,000 fine, or both upon conviction.

In January, the five Indonesians were also convicted under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 in the Sri Aman Sessions Court and were sentenced to a jail term of three months and a stroke of the cane each for entering the country without valid documents. — DayakDaily
