KUCHING, March 26: The implementation of smart traffic lights from Jalan Satok to Saberkas has saved road users up to 11 minutes of travelling time for one trip.

SMART traffic light operator and traffic engineer who prefers to be known as Mr K said an experiment was carried out to find out the effectiveness of the SMART traffic light system, and it yielded excellent results.

Before the smart traffic lights, it took about 22 minutes to drive along the two-kilometre route, which has seven traffic lights, but now it only takes half the previous time with the upgraded system.

There was an improvement of at least 51 per cent in the travelling time, Mr K pointed out.

Other than that route, he said he and his team did the same test on other routes as well such as along Jalan Batu Kawa, Jalan Sekama to Jalan Mendu, Jalan Tun Razak, and Jalan Simpang Tiga.

“Most of them showed 20 to 30 per cent improvement, and it could go up to 69 per cent along Jalan Batu Kawa from Batu Kawa Bridge to MJC.

“Along that road, traffic lights are also located near each other, which often resulted in long waiting times for road users,” he said during Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng’s ShallWee Talk live streaming session today.

Mr K was Wee’s guest today on his Facebook live to talk about the SMART traffic light system implemented in some parts of Kuching and answer the doubts or concerns of netizens regarding the topic. ā€” DayakDaily
