KUCHING, Aug 30: Existing parking coupons can still be used until Oct 31, 2025, during a three-month transition period as Kuching City Parking Systems Sdn Bhd (KCPS) appoints a new vendor to develop, operate and manage the city’s smart parking system.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, during his ShallWeeTalk live session today, encouraged motorists to use up as many of their old scratch parking coupons as possible before the deadline.

“If you still have remaining coupons, you may continue using them until Oct 31.

“After that, if there are still unused coupons, further announcements will be made on how they will be managed, such as through rebates or other means. In the meantime, everyone is advised to make good use of any existing parking coupons during this transition period,” he said.

The parking coupons remain valid and will be accepted under both MBKS and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) jurisdictions.

Wee added that the shift will gradually move towards a fully app-based facility for handling parking payments, but inclusivity remains a priority.

Responding to a viewer’s proposal to retain traditional scratch coupons alongside the digital system until 2027 for the convenience of senior citizens, he agreed, noting that the new digital platform will be designed to be “very friendly” and accessible to all users.

KCPS is currently rolling out a new smart parking system for the whole of Sarawak, anchored by the BorneoParkKCH mobile app, which has been effective since Aug 11, 2025.

The app, available on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store, allows users to register vehicles, reload credit, and purchase parking or seasonal passes directly from their smartphones.

This initiative represents a major step forward in modernising Kuching’s public services and aligns with the city’s broader push towards digitalisation.

“The introduction of this system is aimed at improving user convenience and overall service efficiency, ensuring that no one is left behind as Kuching embraces digital solutions,” he stressed. — DayakDaily
