MIRI, July 9: A joint disaster community task force for Kampung Long Wat in Sungai Tutoh Apoh Baram has been formed to help the fire victims to rebuild the 27 units which were destroyed by a fire in the 85-door longhouse last night (July 8).
The longhouse is about 100-years-old, occupied by an estimated 324 residents.
“I’ve informed both Ketua Kampung (KK) Nawan Ding and Anyie Avit to submit a request letter for government grants,” Dennis disclosed.
He added, to rebuild the 27 affected doors would require approximately RM70,000 per door.
“Fortunately, swift action by the villagers of Kampung Long Wat managed to prevent the fire from spreading further,” said Dennis.
“We hope the affected 27 doors can be rebuilt in time before Irau Easter (Good Friday) in March next year (2024), as the village will play host for the event,” he added.
Dennis was at the village this morning after officiating at an earth-breaking ceremony for Kampung Long Wat’s Borneo Evangelical Church (BEM) guest house.
“Prior to this incident, I got an invitation from the village to perform the earth-breaking, and coincidentally this incident happened on Saturday night,” he said.
No casualties were reported in the fire. The longhouse is about a five-hour drive via logging road from Marudi. — DayakDaily
