English proficiency ensures competitiveness for Sarawakian students, says Minister

KUCHING, Aug 1: Proficiency in the English language ensures Sarawakian students’ competitiveness in both local and international job markets, according to Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD), Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

He emphasised that English proficiency is also crucial for teachers, especially those teaching science and mathematics.

“Proficiency in English grants access to a vast array of resources readily available on the internet, facilitating global learning and knowledge acquisition,” he said when officiating the closing ceremony of Dual Language Programme (DLP) Sarawak Basic Training Course Year 5 2024 held at Grand Continental Hotel here today.

Meanwhile, on the DLP Sarawak Basic Training Course, Sagah said to ensure the sustainability of the programme, MEITD is always committed to assisting DLP teachers and pupils.

In addition to ensuring that all teachers undergo basic training courses, he said the ministry also provides support materials for teachers and pupils, in the form of teacher’s guidebooks, student activity books, and National Geographic learning materials.

“It is hoped that these resources will be utilised by teachers and pupils effectively to support teaching and learning,” he added.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (Talent Development) Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, Deputy Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak Anielia Siam, Deputy Director of Learning Sector Sarawak Education Department Siti Zulaiha Ibrahim, and Samarahan District Education Officer Hapeni Awang Onget. — DayakDaily
