KUCHING, Nov 5: Eleven secondary schools in Sarawak were recently awarded the BrightSparx Grants by Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC).

Of the 40 proposals submitted by schools across Sarawak, 11 recipients who received the award are from Kuching (5), Miri (3), and one each in Sibu, Betong and Bintulu.

According to SRDC statement, the BrightSparx Grants which carries a value of RM5,000 is meant to inculcate the spirit and culture of research and at the same time promote interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among secondary school students.

The award also allows students to carry out scientific research to test a hypothesis which they may be nurturing in their minds.

The BrightSparx projects are student-led initiatives that address issues relevant to local communities, ranging from environmental issues to sustainable usage of resources.

These projects will also help to develop leadership and team-building skills amongst students in addition to raising awareness, enhancing understanding and researching for solutions to local issues. – DayakDaily
