MIRI, July 25: An elderly Chinese woman who has been living in a rundown van parked at Krokop 5 is finally getting the help she needs from the relevant authorities.
On Monday, a team of Miri Welfare Department (JKM) together with Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Piasau branch approached her to investigate the situation.
The woman who is in her 60s had been living inside the old van for more than a year because the room her son is renting nearby is too small to accommodate her.
“So I decided to stay inside this van which is parked adjacent to the rented room where my son is staying,” she said when approached by the SUPP Piasau yesterday.
The woman used to have a house in Tudan when her husband was still alive. Unfortunately, after her husband passed away, one of her children sold the house, forcing her out of the property.
“I moved a lot and have been living in many different places before my son rented a room in Krokop 5. But because the size of the room is too small and could not accommodate the two of us, I decided to stay in the van ever since,” she said.
From the brief visit yesterday, it was observed that she owned no essential items, such as no food, blanket, pillow or even clean clothes in the van.
Every morning, she would go to nearby coffee shops to use their toilets to clean herself.
“And sometimes, people would give me something to eat,” she said.
Miri City Council councillor Leslie Lau who was among those visited her yesterday said
the Welfare Department will take over the case and assist the elderly woman with Bantuan Bulanan and ensure that her basic needs are taken care of.
“Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew has been informed of the issue,” he said. — DayakDaily
