Elderly foreign man dies, wife critically injured in Jalan Kulas crash

KUCHING, Dec 17: An elderly foreign man succumbed to his injuries and passed away in the hospital yesterday (Dec 16), while his wife remains in critical condition following a car accident at Jalan Kulas.

Kuching District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed that the accident occurred at about 12.30pm.

The Perodua Axia driven by the deceased lost control when travelling down from Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakop bridge towards Satok traffic light. He crashed the car into a lamp post and a tree on the road divider.

The man was rushed to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) by ambulance and admitted to the Accident and Emergency Unit. He was pronounced dead by a medical officer at 1.43pm.

His wife, a passenger in the vehicle, sustained severe injuries and is still receiving treatment at the hospital. Both victims were in their 70s.

“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving,” Farhan said in a statement today.

If convicted, the offence carries a penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of up to RM50,000.

Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact traffic investigating officer Inspector Shazwina Alfera Ah Yit @ Suaip at 016-7433078, 082-259900, or visit the nearest police station.

Farhan also reminded road users to exercise caution when driving, especially during the rainy season, and to adhere to all road rules and regulations to ensure their safety. — DayakDaily
