KUCHING, June 27: An elderly couple’s house recently razed in a fire were hopeful that the public could help them buy a new engine for their fishing boat because that is their only means to find source of income.
Although Shamshu Kawie, 69, his wife Dayang Napsiah Awang Ali Hazzan, 63, two children and one grandchild escaped unhurt, his 40-year-old semi wooden house at Jalan Layang-Layang, Kampung Semerah Padi was totally destroyed on the night of June 24.
The fire was reported to Fire and Rescue department at 8.15pm.
The couple lost almost all of their belongings, including two engines which Shamshu needs for when he goes fishing.
“After the incident, a few people came to help us. They sent food ration, clothes and gave us some money as well. We are grateful for everyone’s kindness. But we also hope that someone can help us buy another engine so that my husband and I can return to the river and fish,” Dayang Napsiah said.
The family is currently staying in the second kitchen located just next to the house which has been converted into temporary shelter.
“The fire happened not long after Maghrib prayers. I was busy in the kitchen preparing dinner when my son suddenly rushed in and pull me out of the house.
“Then we saw this huge fire engulfing our roof. I could not save anything, but my husband managed to grab a bag containing our personal documents.
“We don’t know the cause of fire. The authorities (Bomba) are still investigating,” she added.
Earlier today, Petra Jaya MP Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof visited the couple and viewed the gutted house.
He also spoke to the family before handing over some funds to ease their burden.
“I’ve heard from the victims and they needed help in terms of rebuilding their house and a new engine for their boat. Inshaallah, together with ADUN Semariang Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali we will try to assist them soon.—DayakDaily
