KUCHING, June 15: Eight Sarawak judo athletes will represent the country at the 2023 Asian Judo Open Championships, which will be held on July 1 and 2 at the Taipei Gymnasium in Taiwan.
According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) news report, 16 countries are expected to compete at the event, comprising Australia, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Malaysia, France, Hong Kong, India, Kazakhstan, Macau, Nepal, Philippines, South Korea, Romania, Samoa, Sri Lanka, and the United States of America.
On Wednesday (June 14), a flag handover ceremony took place at the Sarawak State Stadium in Petra Jaya here.
The ceremony was attended by Youth and Sports Sarawak Deputy Minister Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu and Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) chief executive officer (CEO) Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan.
Also present were Sarawak State Judo Association president Dato Sri Datuk Lau Kueng Chai and Sarawak State Judo Association secretary Nyam Sze Yuang.
When contacted, Awang Putrayusrie stated that participation in the tournament was intended to give Sarawak athletes exposure, particularly in preparation for next year’s 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma).
According to him, the three female athletes participating in the tournament are the primary support for Sarawak at Sukma next year.
The Sarawak judo athletes will be accompanied by two coaches. — DayakDaily
