KUCHING, March 22: Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing says he has recently brought forward discussions with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to expedite river dredging works and other measures aimed at addressing blocked water flows in several major rivers.

He said that this was necessary and must be carried out immediately as a long-term measure to reduce the risk of flooding in Sarawak, especially in low-lying areas.

“I have discussed with the Prime Minister and requested that dredging works be carried out immediately in the Rajang River and Igan River.

“This is important because many areas such as Tanjung Manis, Bintangor, and Sarikei are facing problems with water not being able to flow out, causing floods to occur (in Sibu and surrounding districts) even if it rains for a short period,” he was quoted as saying by TVS.

He said this when met by reporters during his visit to the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at Dewan Komuniti Sibujaya earlier today.

He emphasised that areas like Dudong are also affected due to blocked water flow, causing repeated floods whenever it rains heavily and therefore, river deepening works are expected to increase water flow capacity and accelerate the recession process in the affected areas.

Meanwhile, regarding financial assistance for flood victims, Tiong said the decision will be made based on Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee’s (SDMC) assessment.

“We are waiting for a decision from SDMC to determine the amount of additional aid that will be distributed to the affected victims. Although assistance from welfare organisations and our side are readily available, it may not be sufficient,” he said, according to TVS.

He also urged the public to lend their support and contributions generously to assist flood victims at the PPS.

He further expressed appreciation to the PPS personnel for their unwavering commitment and tireless efforts in ensuring the welfare and safety of flood victims. – DayakDaily
