KUCHING, Oct 11: State Education Directors will decide daily whether schools continue operating as usual or switch to home-based learning amid the ongoing haze, says the Ministry of Education (MOE).

In a statement yesterday (Oct 10), the ministry said it had instructed State Education Directors to establish Haze Monitoring Task Forces involving State Education Departments and District Education Offices to monitor daily Air Pollutant Index (API) readings.

“Based on the information and data gathered by these task forces, State Education Directors will decide on the operating status of schools, whether they will operate as usual or implement home-based teaching and learning (BDR-PdPR),” the ministry said.

The ministry said announcements must be made by 2.45pm on Saturdays for Group A schools and Sundays for Group B schools.

“This notification will also facilitate arrangements for students travelling to their boarding schools or returning home,” it said.

On other days, State Education Directors must announce school operating status before 5.45pm, based on API readings released by the Department of Environment.

The ministry acknowledged concerns among parents and guardians over the health of schoolchildren as haze continues to affect several areas nationwide.

It urged parents and guardians to stay alert to announcements issued through the official communication channels of State Education Departments, District Education Offices and individual schools. — DayakDaily
