MIRI, Nov 7: The Federation of Orang Ulu Associations Sarawak Malaysia (FORUM) is looking into establishing an educational institution under the organisation to provide Orang Ulu students with an alternative pathway to university education.
FORUM deputy president Dato Dennis Ngau said the proposed institution would function as a preparatory or feeder college to universities, particularly for students who may not have secured university places through direct admission.
“Through this college, they would have the opportunity to further their studies, improve their academic qualifications and prepare themselves before progressing to university or entering the workforce,” he said when delivering his speech at the launching of FORUM Cultural Centre here, today, which was broadcasted live via Ukas Channel.
The centre was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Dennis, who is also Sarawak Kayan Association president and the Organising and Building Committees chairman, said FORUM had already conducted preliminary studies and identified a college in Miri with potential to be considered for the initiative.
“We hope that the proposal could be pursued seriously with the support of relevant parties,” he expressed.
Emphasising the importance of education, he said it was one of the most important ways to transform lives, build confidence and equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to compete in an increasingly challenging world.
“Education is not simply about obtaining certificates or degrees. It shapes the way we think, builds self-confidence, nurtures leadership and creates opportunities for young people,” he said.
He emphasised that FORUM wanted to see more Orang Ulu children become doctors, engineers, lawyers, academics, entrepreneurs, government officers, industry leaders and future leaders of Sarawak.
“We do not want our children to merely watch from the sidelines as Sarawak develops. We want them to become part of the professional workforce, skilled workforce and leadership that drives Sarawak’s development,” he said.
Dennis drew a parallel between the Cultural Centre, which was established to preserve the heritage of previous generations, and the proposed college, which would help prepare future generations.
“While we built this Cultural House to preserve the heritage of previous generations, the educational college we envision is intended to build a future for generations to come,” he said.
He added that improving access to education was essential to ensuring that the Orang Ulu community remained part of Sarawak’s economic and social progress.
Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin; Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai; Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) and FORUM adviser Datuk Gerawat Gala; Deputy Minister of Utility and Communication and FORUM adviser Datuk Liwan Lagang; and FORUM president Datuk Nyurak Keti were among the distinguished guests present. — DayakDaily
