KUCHING, May 17: The Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) has today passed the motion seeking approval from the august House to authorise the government printer to reprint 10,000 copies of the Constitution of the State of Sarawak.

The motion was presented by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also Second Minister for Finance and New Economy and Minister for Infrastructure and Ports Development.

He highlighted that the last printing of the Sarawak Constitution was in 2004 and significant amendments have been made since then, necessitating an update.

“Moreover, it was reported that all copies of the printed constitution have been sold out.

“Hence, it is an appropriate time for the Dewan to authorise the printing of more copies of the State Constitution to meet the demand of the administrators, judicial and legal officers, legal professionals, and the public within and outside the State, as well as the academic community in the country,” he said when tabling the motion.

Meanwhile, Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang when debating in support of the motion, suggested that the Sarawak government reprint 20,000 copies instead of just 10,000 copies.

“With that quantity, they can be distributed to schools, colleges, universities, and even to the longhouses and villages.

“The government can also come out with a simplified explanatory booklet about the constitution printed in all major languages in Sarawak so that it can be easily understood by the communities at large,” he said.

Responding to Wilson, Uggah said in his winding-up speech that the former’s suggestions would be taken into consideration when implementing the motion. — DayakDaily
