Drug-positive suspect with 20 prior records arrested after chase, collisions in Kuching

KUCHING, Feb 1: A 35-year-old local man was arrested at around 1.30pm on Saturday (Jan 31) at the Taman Berjaya area in 4 ½ Mile, Jalan Penrissen here, following an attempt to flee the police and colliding with several vehicles on a flyover.

In a statement, Kuching police chief Alexson Naga Chabu said that the pursuit took place along Jalan Kuching–Serian towards Kuching city centre.

He said that the suspect, who was driving a white Perodua Viva, was tracked down following investigations into a house break-in case in Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho reported on Jan 30, as well as several motorcycle theft cases around Kuching.

“The suspect refused to cooperate and acted aggressively while trying to escape.

“In the incident, a police officer sustained injuries to several parts of his body while attempting to detain the suspect,” he said.

He added that a urine screening test conducted on the suspect showed that he tested positive for drugs, and further checks revealed that he has as many as 20 previous criminal records.

The case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code.
