KUCHING, Dec 2: Democratic Action Party (DAP) candidate for Batu Kawah Dr Kelvin Yii says contesting in the Batu Kawah constituency is an uphill task, especially against its incumbent Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
According to Dr Yii, however, it is important to give Dr Sim a good and positive political competition, because this is good for democracy and the people of Batu Kawah.
“We must not allow him to have a free win. But it is important that he feel the necessary political pressures, and hopefully I can bring the necessary ideas, policies and perspective that would reimagine Batu Kawah in many aspects.
“More importantly, my heart has always been for Sarawak, and this is an opportunity that I can bring my voice to the DUN (State Legislative Assembly) Sarawak so that I can contribute to the policy direction, and the projection of Sarawak,” he told reporters after a press conference to announce the names of Sarawak DAP candidates contesting in Kuching at its headquarters here today.
Dr Yii said he is looking forward for a healthy, mutual, and a positive campaign.
“In the next few weeks, I will share my positive and progressive ideas on how the people of Batu Kawah can benefit from the ideas and policies that I have,” he added.
When asked by the reporters of his opinion on Dr Sim, Dr Yii said he has a lot of respect for the Batu Kawah incumbent who is the president of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) which is part of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition.
“Let this be a competition of ideas, policies, and a foundation of how the future politics in Sarawak will be like,” he said.
When further pressed on whether he is confident in contesting in Batu Kawah, Dr Yii pointed out that he has given his heart and done his best to serve his Parliamentary constituency of Bandar Kuching, as well as in Parliament sittings.
“From there, I will bring the same energy and passion to DUN Sarawak if I am given the chance to make sure that the people of Batu Kawah will be taken care of and their voice will be heard in the DUN, and also to make sure that whichever government that wins the election will not forsake Batu Kawah regardless of who represents the constituency,” he said. — DayakDaily
