Dr Veronica Lugah appointed as Sarawak’s first Dayak woman State Director of Health

KUCHING, Feb 8: Dr Veronica Lugah has made history as the first Dayak woman of Iban ancestry to be appointed as the State Director of Health for the Sarawak Medical Department by the Ministry of Health.

According to a local news report, Dr Veronica assumed the position from Dr Ooi Choo Huck, who retired on Jan 31 of this year.

Prior to her appointment, Dr Veronica served as the State Health Deputy Director (Public Health) and subsequently took on the role of acting State Health Director after Dr Ooi’s retirement.


Her appointment was confirmed by Ministry of Health director-general Datuk Dr. Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan.

Originally from Kuching, Dr Veronica pursued her medical studies at M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, India, graduating in 1997.

She commenced her career with the Ministry of Health Malaysia at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), Kuching, in 1999.

After completing her housemanship at SGH, she transferred to Miri Hospital in the Northern Region of Sarawak.

Dr Veronica holds a Master of Public Health with Distinction, earned in 2005, and a Master of Public Health (Occupational Health) with Distinction, completed in 2008.

She is also a Public Health Medicine Specialist. — DayakDaily
