KUCHING, June 30: Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof says that carbon conservation is to be conducted separately from carbon trading and is to be managed by the Ministry of Plantation and Commodity.
Fadillah, who is, also its minister, said this separation is what is defined under the United Nation Environmental Social And Corporate Governance (ESG) as carbon is considered a commodity.
“The final detail of the discussion is being carried out with the Ministry Of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, and only then my ministry will follow through on what was previously discussed with the Sarawak Premier on the matter,” he said.
Fadillah told reporters this at the Ibadah Qurban program organised by Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) Tupong Branch Women Section held at Surau Darul Fazillah, Gita Laut, Kuching today.
Earlier, a reporter asked him to comment on Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s latest statement on carbon, which he wants to be treated as a commodity.
He went on to say that at the Federal level, they are discussing the law and tax structure governing carbon trading.
Fadillah said at the moment carbon trading is traded on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE), and its laws and regulations are under the purview of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Changes.
He revealed that at the moment, they had discussed governing and managing carbon conservation and its separation in the Federal Cabinet and between the ministries concerned.
“It would take a little while as there are changes in the law and its policy structures. Let us finalise all this with the working committee, and then we bring it to Parliament,” he said.
Fadillah’s wife, Datin Sri Ruziah Mohd Tahir and Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman were also present. — DayakDaily
