KUCHING, Jan 20: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has hit back at a Facebook user for posting misleading information about him.
Speaking to reporters after the MBKS Caring Community Programme in conjunction with Chinese New Year today, he was addressing a Facebook account with the name ‘Oki Wee Maa’ which he claimed misused his photos alongside posting misleading information.
Wee said instead of spreading misinformation or engaging in petty tactics, he urged such individuals to focus on meaningful actions that benefit the community.
“As a mayor, I have a clear conscience and remain committed to prioritising my duties and serving the people wholeheartedly.
“Social media should be a platform for disseminating accurate information, not a tool for spreading baseless claims,” he said.
Reflecting on the Sarawak Election in 2021, Wee recalled how social media was used to unfairly target candidates, including him.
He acknowledged that while such methods are difficult to put an end to, he expressed hope that facts would be reported fairly.
“Instead of wasting energy on baseless accusations, focus on doing good for our citizens. There is no need to target the mayor with unfounded criticisms,” he said.
He reiterated his dedication to working for the welfare of the people and expressed hope that such malicious behaviour would cease, allowing the government to focus on meaningful development and progress.
“The public wants to see tangible contributions, not internal conflicts and disputes. Only through leading by example can society become more harmonious,” he said.
In the Sarawak Election 2021, Wee was a candidate under Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) for the Padungan seat which was retained by Democratic Action Party (DAP) candidate Chong Chieng Jen. — DayakDaily
