KUCHING, Nov 2: Don’t be too quick to throw away your used cooking oil or dump it down the kitchen sink, because it can be sold for up to RM12.50 per 5kg.
Instead of discarding it carelessly, bottle it up in plastic bottles or empty square oil bottles and make some money out of it while contributing to a cleaner, greener environment.
This initiative was highlighted during the ‘Bank Sampah’ programme at the recent Kampung Kenyalang Community Carnival held in the Kenyalang Community Association Hall (KCPA).
The program, organised by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), is aimed at providing community-based waste management services with an environmentally friendly and responsible approach.
It emphasises education, social empowerment, collaboration, and technology to drive Sarawak, particularly Kuching, towards a circular economy.
“You can earn RM12.50 for every 5kg of used cooking oil in Kuching (equivalent to RM2.50 per kilogramme),” Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian shared on his social media platforms on Oct 28.
“(This) May help with the cost of living, but more importantly, also playing your part and role in recycling, (that would contribute to addressing waste problem), climate change, (and) human survival on this planet,’ he added.
There are several organisations in Kuching that specialises in buying back used cooking oil from users or households.
One such entity is Kim Huang Enterprise located at No 26 Lot 3555, Sublot 2, KNLD, Engsing Light Industrial at Jalan Batu Kawa here.
They offer various services, including buying back used cooking oil at attractive prices, collecting used cooking oil, providing storage bottles, and customising collection schedules to fit consumers’ convenience.
Reusing used cooking oil can prove to be beneficial as it can be repurposed into different products.
Based on research online, it can be turned into fuel alternatives such as biodiesels and biofuels for vehicles, animal feed through composting, as well as a number of different household products and cleaning materials like soaps, candles, paint remover, lubricants, shampoo and moisturiser.
So, next time you’re deep-frying, rest assured that the used oil can be repurposed rather than being a concern for disposal. — DayakDaily
