Do continue with electricity bill discount initiative, Telang Usan rep urges

Dennis raises issues when debating the TYT address in the DUN Sitting on May 18, 2023.

KUCHING, May 18: Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau urges the Sarawak government to extend the electricity bill discount initiative until the end of the year.

In February this year, the Sarawak Premier announced that the government would continue to subsidise five to 25 percent of electricity bills for domestic users, commercials, and industries in Sarawak for the first six months of 2023.

When debating on TYT’s speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today, Dennis expressed appreciation for this special gesture that the Sarawak government initiated since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sarawakians are now met with yet another new challenge—El Niño—bringing in a heatwave where the vulnerable may be affected.

In face of extreme climate, Dennis foresaw that some families may need to turn to air-conditioning to fend off heatwave which would mean high usage of electricity, and thus higher living cost.

“This phenomenon is expected to last till the end of the year. Therefore, I urge the government to consider extending the current discount on electricity bill to at least December 2023,” said Dennis. — DayakDaily
